Portable Appliance Testing

PAT testing or Portable Appliance Testing is an integral part of any Health and Safety Policy. The Health and Safety Executive state that 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances. The Electricity at Work Regulations (NI) 1991 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (NI) 1999 place a legal responsibility on employers to comply with the provisions contained within them and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure no danger results from the use of such equipment. This in effect requires the implementation of a concise and systematic program of maintenance, inspection and testing.

The Health and Safety at Work Order (NI) 1978 places such
an obligation in the following circumstances:

• Where appliances are used by employees
• Where the public may use appliances in establishments such as hospitals, schools, hotels, shops etc
• Where appliances are supplied or hired
• Where appliances are repaired or serviced

PAT testing is carried out to ensure that there are no potentially dangerous faults which may arise after significant use of equipment. Testing, together with a thorough visual inspection can detect faults such as loss of earth integrity like a broken earth wire in a flexible cable or deterioration of
insulation integrity.

Our specialist Inspection and Testing Division are able to provide clients with a comprehensive and cost effective Portable Appliance Testing service enabling compliance with regulations and promotion of a safe working environment for all. We can undertake a thorough testing programme including visual inspection, electrical testing using calibrated equipment, repairs, labelling and issue of test results both on CD ROM and hard copy for your records.

Flexibility, competitive pricing and minimum disruption are a major factor of our work with all our testing programmes tailored to suit the client needs through a common sense approach and a cost effective pricing schedule. All of our Inspection and Testing Engineers are qualified
electricians which ensures that they have a greater understanding of the theory behind PAT testing and are able to analyse results on site and fault find if required.
